  1. Call for papers for the 1stFormative Design in Learning Symposium (AECT 2017)

Abstracts Deadline: March 30, 2017

The symposium will be held in Jacksonville, FL on July 22-23, 2017 in conjunction with the regular AECT Summer Leadership Meetings. It will begin the morning of July 22, 2016 and end at the end of day on July 23, 2017. The goal of the symposium is to gather together participants who are interested in a shared peer review process of their submissions to the journal. While the target audience is emerging scholars and graduate students, the intent is for anyone who has a potential submission and wishes to share their research, participate in a real dialogue and deep discussions about their selected topic, and receive some valuable input to help increase their chances for it to be published in the journal. Participants are encouraged to collaborate on their proposals with scholar/mentors who are also encouraged to attend. Click here for more information and submissions.

  1. AECT Webinar – “What are we preparing our students for? An argument for alt-format dissertations”

March 8th at 4:00 PM EST

Hosted by: Feng-Ru Sheu, Kent State University
Presented by: Rick West, Brigham Young University

Most scholars agree that the main purposes of the dissertation are to train students in proper research methodology and to contribute original findings to research. However, some worry that the traditional dissertation format is not conducive to either of these goals. Research has shown that dissertations rarely get disseminated into academic journals, and academics rarely cite dissertations that have not been published as articles. Additionally, some scholars argue that the traditional dissertation format is a poor training tool because it does not prepare scholars for future professional pursuits. Many departments, including mine, now offer alternative-format dissertations, including the option of defending a series of articles. In this webinar, Dr. West will share some of the research about alternative-format dissertations and our experience at BYU. He will discuss what lessons we have learned, and engage you in a discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of the alternative-format dissertation and how it might be used to improve scholarship in our field.

  1. Research to Make a Difference by Dr. Charles Reigeluth, with AECT

To be held on on April 5, 2017, online from 2-3 PM EST.

Could you improve the kinds of research you are doing?  Your chances of getting published?  Your impact on the real world?

Dr. Reigeluth will discuss a variety of topics that may help you to answer these questions, which may be crucial to the success of your career.

  • Different purposes for your research (e.g., to improve practice or to advance theory),
  • Different kinds of knowledge you may want to produce for each purpose (descriptive theory or design theory) and the appropriate forms of such knowledge (e.g., conditional and probabilistic),
  • Different kinds of research methods for producing each kind of knowledge (research to prove or research to improve – confirmatory or exploratory)
  • When in the history of a given focus area each kind of research method is most useful,
  • Different methodological issues for each kind of research (e.g., validity or preferability),
  • Specific methods you might find helpful (e.g., design-based research, formative research, grounded theory development).

1.       JCHE Special Issue Proposal

“The Development of the Instructional Designer”

Special Issue Co-Editors:

Abbie Brown, Ph.D.

East Carolina University

Jill Stefaniak, Ph.D.
Old Dominion University
Call

Research exploring trends associated with instructional designers entering the workforce have identified that there is a discrepancy between employers’ expectations and instructional designers’ performance. With the ever growing demands of our field, instructional designers need to be equipped with the necessary tools and strategies to forward our field. More research is needed that holistically examines the instructional designer.

We should not only be examining the design process instructional designers use to approach problems, we need to study how other designers in other fields approach design decision making. We need to bridge the gap between current instructional design pedagogical practices and employer expectations. Research is needed that focuses specifically on how we are preparing instructional designers. Through examination of trends in our field and various industries, we will be better equipped to develop and further enhance graduate instructional design programs that will prepare the instructional design of the future. Topics may include, but are not limited to the following:

•      Trends in the field affecting how we teach instructional designers

•      Design processes and approaches to design

•      Frameworks for training instructional designers

•      Creating explorative learning environments

Submission Information

Please submit a brief overview (approximately 500 words) of proposed article to Abbie Brown (brownab@ecu.edu) and Jill Stefaniak (jstefani@odu.edu) for initial review. If accepted for review, you will be directed to a JCHE portal for this special issue where you will submit your manuscript under the SI: Instructional Designer. All manuscripts will follow APA guidelines and undergo blind peer review.

Important Dates:

•      April 15th, 2017- Overview of proposed article due

•      August 1st, 2017- Paper Submission Due

•      December 31st, 2017- Revisions Due

•      January 30th, 2018- Acceptance Notification

•      April 2018- Publication Date

Learning Opportunities

If you have courses, webinars, or other educational opportunities of interest, please submit them to the Forum and they will be included in the weekly email.

Other Opportunities

None at this time. When we find something, we will post it. Let us know if you see anything. As things come up during the week, we will forward if they seem directly relevant.
